The Alliance of Free Planets was a transitional galactic government in Isaac Asimov's Foundation series,
Description[]
The Alliance of Free Planets was a short-lived interstellar coalition that emerged following the collapse of the Galactic Empire. It represented an initial attempt to unify independent worlds during the chaotic interim period before the establishment of the Foundation Federation. The Alliance was formally established in 12,081 G.E. and dissolved just two years later in 12,083 G.E.
This political entity was primarily orchestrated by the First Foundation on Terminus as a means of extending its influence through diplomatic and economic channels rather than military force. The Alliance included planets already within the Foundation's sphere of influence such as Terminus, Anacreon, and Smyrno, along with other worlds seeking protection from the instability that followed the Empire's fall.
The Alliance proved inherently unstable due to its loose structure and lack of strong centralized authority. Its brief existence highlighted both the necessity of galactic reorganization and the limitations of soft power alone in maintaining order. Within two years, the Alliance was formally reorganized into the more structured Foundation Federation, marking the Foundation's transition toward more explicit political control.

Trivia[]
The concept of the Alliance was introduced not in the original Foundation stories of the 1940s and 50s, but decades later in Foundation's Edge (1982). Asimov created this historical detail to flesh out the political landscape between the fallen Empire and the mature Federation, adding a layer of depth to the galactic history he was revisiting.
