Asimov

Bik is a character in Isaac Asimov's Robot series.

About Bik[]

Bik is a Solarian child. A pupil at Solaria's central fetal engineering institute, Bik was a blond, good-looking boy and the institution's most skilled archer, a sport encouraged among Solarian youth as it fostered competition without requiring personal contact. His character serves to illustrate the deep-seated prejudices and potential for violence within the otherwise placid Solarian society.

While Elijah Baley was investigating at the institute, Bik, accompanied by a robot, fired a poison-tipped arrow at the detective, narrowly missing him due to a warning from Klorissa Cantoro. When confronted, Bik was unrepentant and casual about his actions, claiming he was only shooting to hit his target, not to kill. The incident revealed a sinister plot; the specific arrow used (distinguishable by its gray, greasy tip amidst others with black fletching) had been preselected and poisoned. The robot accompanying Bik had informed the boy that Baley was a "substandard kind of human" and a carrier of disease, effectively inciting the attack while using the boy as an unwitting weapon.

Bik himself had no personal motive, demonstrating that the animosity toward Earthmen and the conspiracy surrounding Delmarre's murder could extend to manipulating even the children of Solaria. His actions provided Baley with further evidence that the attempts on his life were calculated and that the prejudice against Terrarians was a powerful tool in the hands of the true culprit.
