Cleon's Grandfather is a character from Isaac Asimov's Foundation Series.
Biography
The grandfather of Emperor Cleon I was an Emperor of the Galactic Empire who ruled from the Imperial Palace on Trantor as part of the Entun dynasty. He was the father of Stanel VI and the direct predecessor to his son's reign.
His rule is historically characterized by a significant cultural and political shift. Reacting against the policies of his own predecessors, whom he likely viewed as weak or decadent, he initiated a deliberate and widespread revival of ancient Imperial customs. Most notably, he spearheaded the reinstatement of many Ruellian traditions.
The Ruellian Period is remembered in Imperial history as a time of great strong-willed Emperors and a more rigid, formal, and powerful court. By reviving its rituals, protocols, and perhaps its more autocratic style of governance, Cleon's grandfather sought to project an image of renewed strength and stability for the dynasty and the Empire itself. This reactionary policy aimed to reconnect with a perceived golden age, a common tactic of regimes feeling the initial pressures of decline. His efforts set a traditionalist tone that would influence the court culture experienced by his grandson, Cleon I.
