THALUS, EMMER — ... A sergeant in the armed security forces of the Wye Sector of ancient Trantor... ...Aside from these totally unremarkable vital statistics, nothing is known of the man except that on one occasion he held the fate of the Galaxy in his fist. (Prelude to Foundation)...
Emmer Thalus is a character in Isaac Asimov's Foundation series.
About Emmer[]
Emmer Thalus is a sergeant in the Security Forces of the Wye Sector on Trantor. A tall, muscular, and imposing figure, Sergeant Thalus was distinguished by a long, curving blond mustache and a fringe of beard along his jawline. He wore the distinctive red and white uniform of Wye, adorned with a broad, silver-studded belt. Thalus was a soldier of absolute obedience, characterized by a slow, resonant voice and a formal, almost musical accent. His final mission was to secure and retrieve the mathematician Hari Seldon from a safehouse in Dahl. He initially refused to take Seldon's companions, Dors Venabili and Raych, due to the strict parameters of his orders, leading to a tense standoff. He was ultimately persuaded by Seldon's logical argument about the technicalities of his commands and the immediate threat posed by Raych, who had temporarily disarmed him. Thalus honorably upheld his amended word and safely transported all three to Wye. However, his commitment to his soldier's honor ultimately led to his execution by Mayor Rashelle of Wye when he later refused a direct order to kill Hari Seldon.
