Asimov

Gamol Deen Namarti is a character in Isaac Asimov's Foundation series.

About Namarti[]

Gambol Deen Namarti is the primary lieutenant and operational leader of the Joranumite political movement. A tall, thin man with a sallow complexion, a wide mouth, and lips so pale as to be nearly invisible, Namarti served as Laskin "Jo-Jo" Joranum's chief organizer and second-in-command. His austere and cautious demeanor provided a stark contrast to Joranum's charismatic public person.

His first major appearance is leading an unauthorized, inflammatory rally at Streeling University. From a platform, he rouses a crowd of students with anti-Imperial rhetoric. When Hari Seldon confronts him and demands to see his permit, Namarti responds with hostility and orders his bodyguards to intervene. This leads to a physical altercation where Seldon, using Heliconian torsional grappling, disables one guard and physically subdues Namarti himself, threatening to crush his larynx if he ever returns.

Following Joranum's exile after being outmaneuvered by Seldon and First Minister Eto Demerzel, Namarti becomes the secret leader of the movement. For a decade, he works to rebuild the Joranumites into an underground conspiracy, operating from a secured office in the Wye sector. He masterminds a campaign of precisely timed infrastructural sabotage, disrupting power, ventilation, and water services across Trantor, to foment widespread public discontent without triggering a total collapse. He orders the assassination of a wavering old-line Joranumite, Kaspel Kaspalov, for expressing doubts about this plan.

His ultimate plot involves assassinating new First Minister Hari Seldon to topple the government. He conspires with the Wyan aristocrat Gleb Andorin, who recruits a drugged and psychologically conditioned Raych Seldon, who had infiltrated the conspiracy, to serve as an unwitting assassin. The plan is for Raych, under the influence of the mind-altering drug, to kill his father during the welcoming ceremony for a new group of gardeners at the Imperial Palace. Andorin is then to kill Raych to silence him, making the event appear as a tragic familial murder-suicide.

The plot fails catastrophically. Raych, fighting the drug's effects, turns his neuronic whip on Andorin and kills him instead. In the ensuing panic, the Chief Gardener, Mandell Gruber, kills Emperor Cleon I. The failure of this complex assassination plot leads to the final collapse of the Joranumite conspiracy. Gamol Deen Namarti is subsequently captured by Imperial forces and executed for treason.
