The Great Squires of Sark are the oligarchic rulers of the planet Sark, a group of five individuals who collectively govern the planet and control the entire Galactic supply of kyrt, a valuable fabric, from the subordinate planet Florina. Each Great Squire holds autonomous authority over one of Sark's five continents: Balle, Bort, Fife, Rune, and Steen. Their power is absolute on Sark and is built entirely upon the economic exploitation of Florina and its native population. The political dynamics between the Great Squires are characterized by intense rivalry and mistrust, as seen when the Squire of Fife attempts to use the crisis surrounding the missing Spatio-analyst to accuse a rival of treason and centralize power in his own hands, a move that ultimately leads to the intervention of the Trantorian Empire and the end of their monopoly.
