Hopara is a planet in Isaac Asimov's Foundation series.

About Hopara[]

It is an inhabited planet located within the domains of the Galactic Empire. It is primarily known as the homeworld of Lisung Randa, a psychologist at the University of Trantor, and of his uncle, the mathematician Kiangtow Randa, a figure of some academic importance. Both accounts place Hopara in the historical and literary record of Hari Seldon's early years.

Its exact location is unknown within the available Imperial records. However, it is one of the millions of worlds fully subject to the administration and culture of the Empire. Its technological level is high, comparable to the average standard of Imperial planets, with the capacity to train specialists who reach the Trantorian Universityinhabitants mostly belong to the ethnic group traditionally known as ', with sa"llow complexions and slanted eyes. This ethnic group is spread across numerous worlds, but on Hopara they constitute the demographic majority, which has allowed the preservation of their cultural traits.

Among Hopara children, the game of "Throw the sticks" is common. This playful divination practice involves throwing sticks and pretending to read the future on them. Although it has no real predictive value, it serves a social and communal function, reinforcing interaction and the oral tradition of promises ("you will be tall, handsome, and marry someone rich"). This custom was recalled by Lisung Randa and used as a metaphorical contrast to Hari Seldon's psychohistory.
