Jamin Oser is a character in Isaac Asimov's Robot series.
About Jamin[]
Jamin Oser is the first mate and second-in-command to Captain D.G. Baley aboard the Settler ship. A capable and experienced officer, Jamin Oser is characterized by his red beard and eyebrows, which contrast with his blue eyes, giving an impression of age earned through experience rather than years.
As D.G.'s primary subordinate, Oser frequently serves as a sounding board and a voice of caution, questioning his captain's decisions to ensure all risks are considered. He expresses skepticism about the mission to the abandoned planet Solaria, particularly regarding the presence of the Auroran spacer Gladia Delmarre and her robots, R. Daneel Olivaw and R. Giskard Reventlov, whom he believes make the crew uneasy. Oser is pragmatic and concerned with efficiency, initially objecting to the energy expenditure of low-altitude flying to locate Gladia's former estate. He is also mindful of crew morale, later warning D.G. that the crew would find it burdensome and unnecessary to return Gladia to Aurora after their mission, suggesting they leave her on Solaria instead.
Following a dangerous incident on the planet's surface where Gladia was attacked by a humanoid robot, Oser assisted in the secure storage of a captured Solarian device, a powerful nuclear intensifier, which was brought aboard under strict security protocols. He participated in strategic discussions with D.G., where the captain analyzed the threat posed by Solarian robots and the lessons learned from R. Daneel's violation of the First Law of Robotics in defense of his mistress. Oser's role was integral to the ship's operations, embodying the practical and wary nature of the Settler culture in contrast to Spacer influences.
