Kandar VII is a character in Second Foundation trilogy.
About Kandar[]
Kandar VII, known as "The Last Tyrant", was the Galactic Emperor who reigned from 11,525 GE to 11,549 GE. He belonged to the Wyan Dynasty, a line of rulers who governed the Galactic Empire from approximately 11,500 GE to 11,800 GE. Kandar VII was the last significant emperor of this dynasty, preceding Agis VI, who inherited a destabilized empire. His rule ended abruptly when he was assassinated during a military coup in 11,549 GE.
Kandar VII was born into the Wyan Dynasty, a family known for its ambition and architectural extravagance. His immediate predecessor was a young, overly ambitious boy-emperor who ordered the demolition of Trantor's Mountain of Majesty, a symbolic imperial palace, to replace it with an even grander structure. This project remained unfinished by the time Kandar VII took the throne in 11,525 GE.
Kandar VII’s rule was defined by tyrannical Policies He enforced brutal measures to centralize power, including imposing direct imperial control over autonomous worlds, increasing taxes, and recruiting massive numbers of soldiers. He continued the Wyan Dynasty’s tradition of grandiose construction, though his focus shifted to militaristic and oppressive infrastructure. Kandar VII was influenced by a faction of aristocratic conspirators within the Council of Lords, including Chancellor Jerril Veerdon, who sought to expand their own power by exploiting the Emperor’s greed and paranoia.
Kandar VII's oppressive policies sparked widespread discontent. In 11,542 GE, the Aspertan Rebellion (led by Prefect Otho Norva of the Asperta Sector) erupted. Though the rebellion was crushed, it galvanized other sectors to form the Alliance of Free Planets in 11,543 GE, triggering a full-scale civil war. The conflict drained imperial resources and exposed the fragility of Kandar's rule.
In 11,549 GE, Kandar VII was assassinated by military officers led by Admiral Octavius Valkorion and Admiral Rojahn Damocles, who blamed the Emperor for the empire's decline. His death marked the end of the Wyan Dynasty and paved the way for Agis VI's brief reign.
Kandar VII was notorious for his ruthlessness, using violence and repression to maintain control. Despite his tyrannical image, he was easily influenced by court aristocrats like Chancellor Veerdon. He shared the Wyan Dynasty's obsession with monumental architecture but prioritized military and authoritarian projects.
His assassination ended his dynasty’s rule and accelerated the empire's fragmentation. Kandar VII's policies and the civil war he provoked are cited by historians including Hari Seldon as early signs of the empire's inevitable collapse.
His reign is detailed in expanded universe of the Second Foundation Trilogy, which explores the political turmoil of this era.
