Limmar Ponyets is a character in Isaac Asimov's Foundation series.
About Ponyets[]
Limmar Ponyets was a Foundation trader sent to resolve a crisis on the planet Askone, where a fellow trader named Eskel Gorov had been arrested and sentenced to death for possessing nuclear technology. Ponyets met with Askone's ruler, the Grand Master, who refused to release the prisoner due to strict religious laws against advanced technology.
During negotiations, Ponyets shifted tactics away from direct appeals. He demonstrated a device called a transmuter, which could produce gold from base metals. While publicly condemning the technology as forbidden sorcery, he privately supplied gold to members of the Five Tribes, Askone's ruling council. Their greed ultimately overcame religious doctrine, and they pressured the Grand Master to accept Ponyets' terms.
The negotiation succeeded without violence or religious conversion. Ponyets secured Gorovr's release and obtained exclusive trading rights for the Foundation on Askone. His actions demonstrated the Foundation's transition from religious manipulation to economic influence, using material incentives to overcome opposition.
