Mandell Gruber was a First-Class Gardener in the Imperial Palace grounds on Trantor during the reign of Emperor Cleon I. He was a native of Anacreon, Gruber was a simple, timid man who found deep satisfaction in his work with plants.
As reward for this service, Emperor Cleon I decreed that Gruber would be promoted to Chief Gardener, succeeding the previous Chief Gardener Malcomber.
A feeling of hatred crept into him, feeling imprisoned in Trantor. During the conspiracy plot for killing the First Minister, taking advantage of the panic and confusion, overwhelmed by the prospect of his new responsibilities and despairing at the loss of his simple life, Gruber assassinated Emperor Cleon I. He was immediately executed by Imperial guards following this act.
