Matt Khorov is a character in Isaac Asimov's Empire series.
About Khorov[]
Matt Khorov, also known as "the Baker," was a Florinian operating a bakery in the Lower City of Florina's capital and a clandestine agent for the Trantorian Empire.
Khorov used his bakery as a front for his rebellious activities and as a safe house for those fleeing the Sarkite authorities. His establishment was equipped with a hidden escape route through a dummy radar furnace leading to a concealed room. He first aided the fugitives Myrlyn Terens, Valona March, and Rik by intercepting them in a crowd during a patroller raid, directing them to his bakery, and sheltering them. He claimed to regularly interfere with patrollers and help fugitives out of a personal hatred for them and a desire to fight the Sarkite oppression, presenting himself as a Florinian patriot.
He provided the fugitives with food and shelter for a night. However, it was later revealed by the Sarkite authorities to the I.S.B. that Khorov was, in fact, a long-term Trantorian agent, a fact known to their Department of Security. His cover was ultimately blown when he was killed by a member of the Florinian Patrol while Terens, Valona, and Rik were in his custody, leading to their capture by the Squires.
