The Nebular Kingdoms is a region of the Galaxy from the Isaac Asimov's Empire series.

About the Nebular Kingdoms[]

The Nebular Kingdoms, also referred to as the Nebular Regions, was a sector of space that became one of the most prosperous areas in the Galaxy during the first centuries of humanity's interstellar expansion. Its wealth and strategic position later made it the primary power base for the Tyranni Empire.

The region was characterized by its numerous inhabited worlds, such as Rhodia and Lingane, which followed a predictable pattern of development. As theorized by Gillbret oth Hinriad of Rhodia in his historical research, the standard evolution for a planet began with an agrarian economy. It would then slowly develop mining operations, followed by industrialization, and finally advance to interstellar commerce and industrial specialization with other planets.

History[]

This natural progression was violently interrupted by the rise of the Tyranni Empire. Based on the harsh planet Tyrann, the Tyranni launched a swift and brutal fifty-year campaign of conquest, subjugating nearly every world in the Nebular Kingdoms. The Tyranni deliberately suppressed the final stage of economic development—interstellar trade and specialization—in the worlds they conquered. They implemented this policy to prevent the Outer Worlds from accumulating enough economic and technological power to ever threaten their sphere of control. By keeping the planets isolated and economically stunted, the Tyranni ensured their continued dominance, artificially halting the historical evolution of an entire region of the Galaxy.
