The Neuronic Whip is a non-lethal energy weapon designed to attack the nervous system. It functions by overstimulating sensory nerves, causing intense pain and incapacitation in humans; a sufficiently powerful blast can be fatal or cause permanent disability. The weapon is notably ineffective against robots, as their positronic brains do not possess an equivalent biological nervous system. In Robots and Empire, the Solarian robot Landaree uses a neuronic whip against R. Daneel Olivaw, with no effect other than to confirm Daneel's non-human nature. The whip is often contrasted with blasters or disintegrators, offering a means of subjugation rather than outright destruction, and is a common sidearm for law enforcement and security personnel across the Settler and Spacer worlds.
