New York Police Department is a law agency in Isaac Asimov's Robot series.

Description[]

The New York Police Department (NYPD) is the law enforcement agency for New York City, operating within the structured hierarchy of the City's administration.

The Department is organized under a Commissioner, such as Julius Enderby, and employs detectives ranked by a C-level qualification system, such as Elijah Baley (C-5) and Philip Norris (C-5). Its headquarters contains specialized areas including a common room for detectives, private offices, arrest blocks, and interrogation rooms. The Department utilizes advanced technology for its operations, including mercury-tank data storage files and portable decoders for secure information cards.

A central conflict within the Department is the gradual replacement of human personnel, like clerk Vincent Barrett, with robots like R. Sammy, a process that creates tension and fear among the workforce. The Department's jurisdiction includes the terrestrial portions of New York City, but its authority is limited within the extraterritorial Spacer Sector (Spacetown), requiring delicate cooperation with Spacer authorities, as seen in the joint investigation of Dr. Sarton's murder.
