Niss is a character from Isaac Asimov's Robot series.
About Niss[]
Niss is a First-Class Crewman aboard Captain D.G. Baley's Settler ship. A tall, strong man with a bronzed complexion, Niss was the ringleader of a group of five crewmen who approached Gladia Delmarre after she disembarked on Solaria.
He initiated a confrontation, addressing her disrespectfully and questioning her age, while his companions made crude, suggestive remarks. When Gladia refused to shake his hand, R. Daneel Olivaw intervened to protect her. Niss attacked Daneel but was swiftly and easily subdued and humiliated by the robot, who subdued him without causing serious injury. Captain Baley intervened, confiscated the crew's weapons, and held a disciplinary hearing. Baley subsequently fined Niss two weeks' pay, stripped him of his crew chief status, and threatened him with permanent exile from spaceflight if he spoke of the incident, revealing that his opponent was the robot R. Daneel Olivaw. Following these events, Niss expressed deep remorse and was reportedly eager to apologize to Gladia for his actions, his attitude toward her changing to one of respect.
