The President of the Assembly is a character from Isaac Asimov's Robot series.
About the President[]
The President of the Auroran World Legislative Assembly, as the Head Office of the Legislature of Aurora, is the closest analogue to a head of state on Aurora. The office is defined by the planetary statute as being largely honorific, with responsibilities including receiving foreign dignitaries, opening legislative sessions, and presiding over debates, with a vote only cast to break a tie. In practice, however, the President wields considerable soft power. Following the River Controversy, it became customary for political disputes to be resolved privately before reaching the Assembly floor.
The President, by maintaining strict neutrality, acts as the key mediator in these private negotiations. A decision from the President carries immense weight, as the Assembly almost invariably ratifies it to avoid a governmental crisis. The President is elected to a thirty-year term by the Assembly and may be re-elected once. The President's influence is entirely dependent on their perceived objectivity, and a vote against their recommendation would likely force their resignation.
