Prometheus is the first rocket built by John Harman, intended to achieve human flight to the Moon.
Prometheus was constructed in secret under extreme social and political opposition, including threats from newspapers and the powerful evangelist Otis Eldredge. It was scheduled for launch in 1973, but on the day of the flight, the rocket was sabotaged by Eldredge's follower, Shelton. The sabotage caused a catastrophic explosion that killed 28 people in a mostly hostile crowd and destroyed the rocket. Despite its failure, Prometheus represents the initial attempt at lunar travel and the challenges faced by early space pioneers under a climate of fear and repression.
