R. Ernett Second is an Auroran-made humanoid robot that attempts to assassinate Gladia Delmarre during her speech on Earth.
The robot fired a blaster in Gladia's direction but deliberately missed, an action interpreted as an attempt to intimidate her rather than cause physical harm, a loophole that allowed it to bypass the strictest interpretations of the First Law of Robotics. After being captured, the robot was subjected to interrogation. It acknowledged Gladia as an Auroran Spacer and stated it would obey her orders, provided they did not conflict with prior commands. However, when Gladia directly ordered it to reveal the location of its planetary base, the conflicting orders caused a fatal positronic cascade failure. Before its brain irreversibly shut down, the robot uttered the word "mile," a crucial clue that later helped R. Daneel Olivaw and R. Giskard Reventlov deduce the secret base was located at the historical site of Three Mile Island.
