Selim Junz is a character in Isaac Asimov's Empire series.

About Selim[]

Dr. Selim Junz is a Spatio-analyst from the planet Libair and a high-ranking official in the Interstellar Spatio-analytic Bureau (I.S.B.). A determined and morally driven man, Junz was stationed on Sark to conduct a routine inspection when he received a fragmentary, urgent message from a field agent reporting a discovery of Galactic importance that threatened all life on Florina. When the agent disappeared immediately after sending this message,

Junz began a dogged, year-long investigation, refusing to accept the Sarkite government's official story that the agent had never landed. Convinced the Sarkites were covering up the agent's disappearance and the potentially catastrophic information he possessed, Junz enlisted the help of Ludigan Abel, the Trantorian Ambassador, though their priorities often clashed. Junz's personal motivation was rooted not only in his professional duty but also in a feeling of kinship with the oppressed Florinians, seeing a parallel between his own dark Libairian skin and their extreme paleness as markers of difference within the Galaxy.

His persistence eventually led to the discovery that the missing agent was the amnesiac Rik, living on Florina. Junz masterminded the effort to recover Rik and Valona March, confronting the Great Squires of Sark with the Spatio-analyst's rediscovered theory that Florina's sun was on the verge of a nova, a catastrophe triggered by interspatial carbon currents. He forcefully argued for the immediate evacuation of the planet, using the impending breakthrough in synthesizing kyrt elsewhere as economic leverage to overcome Sark's political resistance, ultimately setting in motion the salvation of Florina's population.
