The Three Laws of Robotics, also called the Three Fundamental Rules of Robotics, or the Four Laws of Robotics after the addition of the Zeroth Law, are fundamental laws that are inculcated into the positronic brains of all robots in Isaac Asimov's Robot series and more generally in his Foundation Universe.

These laws govern the robots' behavior and the use of robots.

The Original Laws of Robotics (The Calvinian Religion)[]

  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  3. A robot must protect it's own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

The Zeroth Law (The Giskardian Reformation)[]

A robot must act in the long-range interest of humanity as a whole, and may overrule all other laws whenever it seems necessary for that ultimate good.
