Asimov

Trantorian Empire is a galactic government entity in Isaac Asimov's Foundation series.

Ahout the Empire[]

The Trantorian Empire was the preeminent interstellar power during the centuries of its expansion prior to its official transformation into the Galactic Empire.

Originating from the planet Trantor, the Empire began as a republic that, over a period of five hundred years, systematically absorbed neighboring stellar systems through a combination of military conquest and diplomatic coercion.

During the Nova crisis, Trantor, a significant portion of the Galaxy but had not yet achieved total unification. Its primary rival was the independent, kyrt-rich planet Sark. The Empire's foreign policy, executed by ambassadors like Ludigan Abel, was characterized by long-term strategic patience, employing espionage, economic pressure, and political manipulation to weaken potential adversaries and pave the way for peaceful annexation. The ultimate goal of the Trantorian Empire was not merely conquest but the establishment of a universal peace, the Pax Trantorica, under a single, centralized government, believing this to be the only alternative to perpetual interstellar war. This period of aggressive expansion directly preceded the establishment of the Galactic Empire, with Trantor as its capital world.
