Asimov

Valona March is a character in Isaac Asimov's Empire series.

About Valona[]

Valona March, also known as Big Lona, was a Florinian woman. Orphaned at a young age after her parents were taken away by patrollers, Valona was forced into work in the kyrt mills earlier than other children. She grew up isolated, a large, strong girl considered plain by her community, largely ignored and expected to remain unmarried.

Her life was defined by solitude and manual labor until she was given charge of an amnesiac man found near the village, whom the locals named Rik. For a year, she served as his devoted guardian and protector, nursing him, guiding him, and defending him from the ridicule of village children, her maternal instincts finding an outlet in his childlike dependence.

Her loyalty to Rik was absolute. When his memories began to return, pointing to a terrible danger to Florina, she unhesitatingly followed him and the Townman, Myrlyn Terens, on a desperate flight to the planet Sark. Posing as his sister under the alias Hansa Barne, she demonstrated remarkable resourcefulness and courage, navigating the immense dangers of Sarkite society. Her sharp observation during the final confrontation between the Squires and the Trantorian Ambassador was crucial, as she was the one to identify Terens as the man who had been secretly watching over Rik from the very beginning. After the revelation of the threat to Florina , the Nova Crisis, and the beginning of the planetary evacuation, she and Rik, whose real identity as a Spatio-analyst was confirmed, left Florina together.
