Asimov

Vincent Barrett is a character in Isaac Asimov's Robot series.

About Vincent[]

Vincent Barrett is a former clerk at the New York City Police Department who was replaced by the robot, R. Sammy. Vincent Barrett was a young, well-liked, and capable clerk working for the NYPD. His employment was terminated when his position was automated and given to the robot, R. Sammy. This event left him desperate and "declassified," forcing him to find menial work as a messenger in the yeast farms, a significant demotion in status and quality of life.

His situation is cited by Detective Simpson as a prime example of the human cost of robotic automation, creating resentment and fear among the human workforce. Barrett visits the police department to plead for his old job back or any other position, highlighting the personal devastation caused by his replacement. He is a symbol of the economic and social anxiety pervasive on Earth, representing the thousands of workers threatened by the increasing use of robots.
